The National Firearms Act (NFA) regulates the ownership of certain firearms and accessories including silencers, short barrel rifles (SBR), short barrel shotguns (SBS), machine guns, and destructive devices. While these items are legal at the federal level with proper registration, individual states may have additional restrictions or complete bans.
NFA items still require ATF registration and approval through Form 4 (transfer) or Form 1 (making). Since January 1, 2026, the federal making and transfer tax is $0 for NFA firearms other than machine guns and destructive devices, which retain the $200 tax.
